Week one, PREVIEW

Greetings fellow geeks,

This is Ben here, happy to announce the start of our new entirely custom magic

the gathering set!!!

It will be ready for play in Easter and Will and I are very excited to test our

warped imaginations in the greatest form of drafting known to man (everyone

knows women don't play magic) the holy cube!

Right, onto the fun stuff cos we all know you people just skip down to the

picture!

Our new custom set is set in a new underwater world! That's right folks, the

entire lot is underwater!!!

Today, I'm going to be previewing one of our new mechanics and hopefully the

card will demonstrate a lot more as well.

On to the card:

Lurking Octopus, a creature you could take home to meet your mum.

First Glance: 2/2 for 2 in blue, hardly a bad start. Flash is a nice ability to have

especially with the high blue colour commitment.

But, cloudform.. what the hell is that?

Will: It's our new mechanic...

Oh right, well like any good mechanic there's a story behind it. Unlike any

good story it starts with the words:

"We could use phasing"

You see, we really wanted to like phasing creatures, they just weren't that

good... It's a nice idea, but it doesn't get around the fact that when you paid

mana for something you wanted it to be there until it bit a doomblade...

So we thought, what about a phasing where it did something... Now this may

be somewhat besides the point, but only when you are comparing it to phasing

creatures that were powerful except for the phasing drawback.

So the goal was to give players choice, and therefore have fun, but make

either choice a decent choice. Now look at our friend, each turn you have to

decide, do I want him a creature to send into the red zone for 2, do I want him

to be an enchantment in there turn to stop an attack. Hell, you might need him

to be a creature to block that Leveller who just happens to be threatening your

pitiful life score and spraying ink its face really isn't going to save you and you

need to throw the damn fish into the way to save its master. You can even use

it on the offence to save your creatures, it means your enchantment moded

octopus friend can save any other creatures on the attack from trade blocks.

I have to say, I am enthusiastic about the fluff/story implications, obviously

the squids and octopi spray ink to create their cloud effect, but we also have

water elementals joining the ranks of the blue legion!
Feel free to email any questions in or post below, until next time folks!

Ben
